Avala: Lore Dive - Spirit Screams

Updated: Dec 26, 2022

Welcome to the first official Lore Dive for Avala: Spirits of the Mindscapes. I'm Caleb Teal, and today I will be talking about something from the Avala: Spirits of the Mindscapes series, written by myself. Today we will be focusing on Spirit Screams.

Spirit Screams, first introduced in Avala: Spirits of the Mindscapes - Book 2: Death, are a form of sound not heard with your ears, but instead with your very spirit. They are produced by creatures with very forms of non-mundane powers, like the Spirits of the Mindscapes, Echarikith, and Echhaar. These screams are otherworldly, sounding to the listener like a thousand voices screaming various related words at once. They are loud, and powerful, able to produce near magical effects in some users.

We first really see Spirit Screams used in Book 2: Death, when the Echhaar Destroyer attacks Avala and her friends. This is the very first spirit scream in the series, and from there, their usage only grows. Later on in Book 2: Death, another character uses a spirit scream to command an army of ghosts, that they have just gained access to. And in book 3 is the first time Avala produces a Spirit Scream of her own.

Starting in Avala: Spirits of the Mindscapes - Book 3: Ruins, Spirit screams, and other forms of spirit sound start showing up in a graphical form, in order to better convey the messages they are trying to show. An example of this follows:

In a spirit scream graphic, the colors, font, and words involved all convey meaning, though that meaning won't necessarily be obvious right away. In the above case, this was a spirit scream coming from Namjila, who's spirit form color is red. The font, indicates an rage or hate based voice, and the words both represent Namjila's anger, as well as the fact that she's using the spirit scream to create a portal from her mindscape into Avala's.

Another spirit scream graphic as seen in Book 3: Ruins is as follows:

The colors for this one represent the colors of the Echarikith, who are the ones using this spirit scream. The font, represents something terrible coming. The words represent the doom, death, and destruction that the user is brining onto the target.

These spirit scream graphics will show up in all Avala: Spirits of the Mindscape books going forward, as I believe they help convey that these are not regular screams at all, but are instead something far more mystical and powerful.

That's all for today's Lore Dive. Thanks for reading.
